World War 1 - Play in a Day
In honour of all those men, women and children who had to endure the Great War, my Grandfather included, I will be running my 'Play in a Day' workshops on the theme of the war to end all wars. Through the course of a day we will write, rehearse and perform a play based on the life of a soldier from the initial excitement of being a part of a big adventure to the terror and futility of life in the trenches.
The students will be given salient facts of life as a soldier and be asked to imagine how they would feel in various situations. They will write a diary, extracts of which will be the basis of the play. The fantastic Folk Group 'Harp and a Monkey' have supplied the music for the show.
I have conducted a number of 'Play in a days' on this subject and the end product produced with the children has been described by teachers variously as eye opening, stunning and heartbreaking.
The session is suitable for Key Stage 2 and above. Some schools like to spend a bit more time on the play and my 'Play in a Day' has some times lasted 3 days!
